The Year of Cuba

2016 is the year of Cuba. The island has been in the spotlight of news media all over the world, not only for political reasons, but also for being the stage of major events.

Throughout the first months of the year, stories about Cuba have spread thanks to performances by famous artists. First came the electronic project Major Lazer, although their performance in the well-known Malecón of Havana cannot compare to what would come later: The Rolling Stones.

The month of May would see a convergence in Havana of Hollywood star Vin Diesel—in the island to shoot a new entry in the Fast & Furious franchise—and the models of Chanel, who would participate in a fashion show put together by Karl Lagerfeld.

However, the hundreds of onlookers who gathered around El Prado to catch a glimpse of the Chanel show and the people who watched the Fast & Furious shooting from buses stuck in traffic wondered, what’s the point in all this racket? Will there be a significant change in the country’s daily life?

Many Cubans do not understand the sudden opening after decades of shutting the doors on a cultural industry considered typically capitalist, banal and inciting to consumerism. Some justify the shift based on economic interests, though no one knows what the profits amount to or what happens with them.

For many this is just a passing fad, a whirlwind which will only raise some dust. It is a Cuba fever, propelled by those who want to know or use as a backdrop a country which is frozen in time.

For now, the fad continues. International stars keep visiting the island, some concealing their presence, others more openly. Fast & Furious is followed by the fifth installment of Transformers, and even The Simpsons will visit the communist island in the Caribbean Sea. Yes, 2016 promises to be the year of Cuba.
